Ikebana International
was founded in Tokyo in 1956
as a non-profit, cultural organization
established for the purpose of spreading the
knowledge of the
Japanese Art of Flower arrangement
and allied throughout the world.
The founder, the late Ellen Gordon Allen,
would indeed be proud of the growth and
development of the organization.
Ikebana International
now has 8,500 members and 165 chartered
chapters in 60 countries, covering the globe;
from Culcuta to New York,
from Bonn to Buenos Aires.
The motto of Ikebana International,
" Friendship through Flowers"
is exemplified during meetings where
men and woman of all  nationalities;
students, teachers, and those "interested",
join to learn and enjoy the fellowship created
through this medium.
The origins of Ikebana
date back to the 15th Century.
Earliest concepts conceived Nature through
judicious placement of
branches and flowers in a container.
Through the years
it has been developed by Flower Masters
along diverse lines designed to
satisfy an outlet for creative people sensitive to
the beauty of nature.
The HONG KONG CHAPTER
was chartered in October 1959.
Regular meetings are held from
September to next June
as one term,
providing members with a regular forum
in which to study IKEBANA,
hold exhibitions,
see some of the world's masters at work,
enjoy the meetings of people
from many countries and
travelling to REGIONAL and
WORLD CONFERENCES.
Since 1965,
the Hong Kong Chapter of Ikebana International
decided that the Chapter
undertake a single charity effort.
The Dutches of Kent Children's Hospital
was chosen and in consultation with the
Governors,
the Chapter agreed to maintain a bed there.
